A new joiner asks what applies to parental leave. The handbook says one thing, the contract another.
Both were written by someone who meant well, two years apart.

In plain terms: the Employee Handbook is not a legal requirement. The employment documentation is.
Every employee has to be given written information on all terms of material importance. Most of it by the seventh calendar day after work starts, the rest within a month.
The handbook has a different job. It carries forward what the other documents say, so it goes wrong the moment one of them changes. That is why it ages faster than anything else you have.
Do any of these sound familiar?
- When was the Employee Handbook last updated?
- Does every new employee get their terms in writing within seven days?
- What happens to the handbook when the company car policy changes?

Which version of the employment contract is the one that applies?
If you have to ask, more than one template is in circulation. Keep one current template with a version number and a date. Store every signed contract together with a note of which version it was built on.
Johan Gerebro, CEO and co-founder, answers the question we get most. A collective agreement is not triggered by reaching a certain size. No such threshold exists.
